Marrero extends from the Mississippi River levee south toward the wetlands along the Barataria corridor, and the housing stock reflects that range. Older homes closer to the river tend to be on raised foundations and were built in the mid-20th century, with kitchen layouts that reflect that era. Communities further south along Barataria Boulevard include newer construction with more conventional open layouts. The Barataria Preserve of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park begins just south of Marrero’s residential areas, giving the community a distinct character that longtime residents value.
